NCDC Reports 2,102 Cholera Cases and 63 Deaths Across 33 States

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported 2,102 suspected cholera cases and 63 deaths in 33 states and 122 local government areas (LGAs).

At a media conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Dr. Jide Idris, the Director-General of NCDC, identified the top 10 states contributing about 90% of the cases. These states are Bayelsa, Abia, Zamfara, Bauchi, Katsina, Cross River, Ebonyi, Rivers, and Delta.

Dr. Idris pointed to several factors driving the cholera outbreak, including inadequate toilet facilities, poor sanitation, and a lack of access to safe water.

“Only 123 (16%) of 774 LGAs in Nigeria are free from open defecation, with Jigawa as the only state completely open defecation free,” he said. “Over 48 million

To combat the outbreak, the NCDC has activated the National Cholera Multisectoral Emergency Operation Centre (EOC). Moreover, the EOC coordinates efforts across various areas, including surveillance, case management, infection prevention, risk communication, community engagement, water sanitation, hygiene, vaccination, logistics, and research.

Furthermore, the NCDC urges everyone to follow hygiene practices and use safe water to help stop the spread of cholera.
