According to Umahi, the project is capable of promoting the rapid integration of the West Africa subregion in the areas of commerce and social development among neighboring nations, so it needs to be completed immediately.
Umahi said this during a recent briefing on the highway, a project initiated by five heads of state and government from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Abuja.
Highlighting the importance of understanding the corridor’s unique characteristics, Umahi advocated segmenting the project to facilitate efficient work and timely delivery.
He said: “I think for ease of work and speedy completion, the project should be sectioned, and put a process in place to make the project achievable because some sections might be viable, while others might not.”
Expressing the need for concrete pavement on the Nigerian stretch of the highway, Umahi emphasized the significance of this specific construction material.
Sediko Douka, leading the ECOWAS team as the Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy, and Digitalisation, noted that Africa’s economic integration is being hampered by deficits in transportation infrastructure, thus the 2050 ECOWAS agenda to address the problem.
Also, the Director of Infrastructure Department, ECOWAS, Malik Ashoke, hinted that the bridge linking Nigeria and Cameroon had been commissioned.
