The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has taken decisive action to address the ongoing crisis in the Niger Republic.
The regional organization has ordered the activation of its standby force to restore constitutional order in the nation.
Omar Alieu Touray, the President of ECOWAS, conveyed this crucial decision during the reading of ECOWAS’ resolution on the Niger coup at an extraordinary meeting held in Abuja on Thursday. This move comes as a response to the defiance displayed by coup leaders who have rejected attempts at dialogue and continue to detain President Mohamed Bazoum and his family members.
ECOWAS’ call for support extends to the African Union (AU), partner countries, and various institutions. The sub-regional body is seeking solidarity and backing for its stance in addressing the unfolding situation in the Niger Republic.
The resolution articulated the following actions:
“Direct the committee of the Chief of Defence Staff to activate the ECOWAS standby force with all its elements immediately. Order the deployment of the ECOWAS standby force to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger. Underscore its continued commitment to the restoration of constitutional order through peaceful means.”
