The truck, descending from Ita-Opo, lost its brakes, hit a commercial tricycle and a parked Toyota Camry, and then rammed into the market.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority shared details of the incident on its official X handle on Monday.
The post read: “A fatal accident occurred due to a brake failure of a truck descending from Ita-Opo. It hit a commercial tricycle and a parked Toyota Camry before ramming into the Ayetoro Market Complex.
“Three lives were lost, and the bodies have been taken to the morgue at Epe General Hospital. A tow truck is on the ground to evacuate the affected vehicles. Traffic has been diverted for smooth vehicular movement.”
This comes just a few weeks after an overturned fuel tanker exploded in northern Nigeria, killing at least 153 people. Most of the victims were people who had rushed to the scene of the accident to collect leaking petrol.
Officers had warned people not to approach the tanker after the accident late on Tuesday night, but they were unable to contain the growing crowd.
In a condolence message to the families of the victims, Vice-President Kashim Shettima called for a comprehensive review of fuel transportation safety protocols across Nigeria.
