The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Olubunmi Johnson for allegedly setting his wife, Kikelomo, on fire in their apartment on Fagbuyi Street, Ilogbo, in the Ota area of Ogun State.
The Live News learned the incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Friday, following a domestic dispute between the couple. It is believed that the argument escalated quickly, leading to the violent act.
A neighbor who witnessed the incident was horrified by the scene and immediately alerted the victim’s relatives. In turn, they contacted the police, who arrived at the scene shortly after being notified.
At the time of this report, the exact circumstances leading to the confrontation remain unclear. However, the spokesperson for the state police command, Omolola Odutola, confirmed that Johnson has been detained in connection with the crime. Authorities have indicated that the case is being treated as an attempted murder, though investigations are ongoing.
Odutola noted that police officers from the Ilogbo Division acted swiftly and arrested the 55-year-old suspect. “The husband doused his wife’s body with petrol and set her on fire with a match. Witnesses to the incident immediately rushed her to the hospital. Upon receiving the report, our detectives quickly took action and arrested the husband, who has since been detained,” Odutola explained.
The victim, Kikelomo, is currently receiving treatment for severe burns, and her condition remains critical. Family members have expressed their shock and devastation over the incident.
The police have promised a thorough investigation into the matter, and Johnson is expected to face charges of attempted murder. This latest incident adds to the growing concerns about domestic violence in the region, with authorities urging the public to take a stand against such acts of violence.
