The allergy spectrum is vast and often debilitating, from runny noses and watery eyes to life-threatening anaphylaxis.
But despite this, some Nigerians remain skeptical and raise eyebrows when they hear the phrase “I am allergic.” This is commonly done and has left many who are allergic to certain substances upset, as they are almost openly accused of lying
This begs the question – why do some Nigerians deny the existence of allergies?
1. First, let me start by saying that Nigerians are strong and resilient.
They believe in the power of herbs, spices, and traditional medicine to cure almost anything that ails them. So, when it comes to allergies, some Nigerians are skeptical about their existence. A saying goes, “If you don’t believe it, it can’t hurt you.” So, you won’t have one if you don’t believe you have an allergy. Simple logic, right?
2. Another reason why some Nigerians don’t believe in allergies is that they have never experienced them themselves.
They think that an allergy is a “white man’s disease” and that Nigerians are immune to them. Nigerians believe they have strong immune systems and can handle anything that comes their way, including pollen, dust, and pet dander.
3. Some Nigerians also believe that allergies are just an excuse for people to avoid certain foods or activities.
They think that if you don’t like a particular food, then you’ll claim to have an allergy to it, so avoid eating it. Or, if you don’t want to participate in a particular activity, you’ll say you’re allergic to it to get out of it.
In the real sense of it, denying the existence of allergies can have serious consequences. They can cause severe reactions, and without proper treatment, they can be life-threatening. Furthermore, allergies can significantly impact a person’s quality of life, limiting their activities and causing physical and emotional distress.
While some Nigerians may remain skeptical, it is essential to acknowledge their reality and seek appropriate treatment. Education and awareness about allergies are necessary to overcome cultural stigmas and misconceptions.
And for those who suffer from allergies, know that you are not alone, and help is available. So, next time someone tells you that allergies aren’t real, sneeze in their face and see how they feel.
Just kidding, but seriously, allergies are no joke!
