The English midfielder revealed that his choice was primarily influenced by his desire to work under manager Mikel Arteta, whom he firmly trusts to steer his career in the right direction.
Rice’s move to the Gunners marked a significant club-record signing for Arsenal. Despite being courted by football giants such as United, Chelsea, and City, Rice was swayed by the prospect of collaborating with the Spaniard at the Emirates, especially given Arsenal’s commendable performance as Premier League runners-up in the previous season.
When asked by Joe Cole during an interview on Channel Four before the England national team faced Ukraine, Rice elaborated on his decision, stating, “I have to say the manager, Mikel. From the moment that I met him, I knew he was the one that I wanted to take care of the next part of my career, and I just had that gut feeling that Arsenal would be the club, even though there was other interest.”
The versatile midfielder also discussed the change in playing style, acknowledging that while there hasn’t been a significant leap in quality compared to his time at West Ham, the tactical demands at Arsenal have required him to adopt a more advanced role on the pitch.
Since joining Arsenal, Rice has been an integral part of the squad, featuring in every game this season and even finding the back of the net in a thrilling 3-1 victory over Manchester United before the international break.
Looking ahead, Rice is set to represent England in their upcoming clash against Scotland in an International Friendly as both teams commemorate the 150th anniversary of football’s oldest recorded international fixture. Arsenal fans eagerly await his continued contributions to the team as they prepare to face Everton in the Premier League on September 17, 2023.
