Chelsea Football Club has reportedly agreed to sign Kendry Paez, an attacking midfielder and winger, from Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle for a fee of £17.6 million ( million).
Paez will join the Blues in 2025, and the personal terms of the agreement have been settled.
Under the new ownership of Todd Boehly, Chelsea has adopted a future-focused philosophy, with a particular emphasis on developing young talent.
Paez, currently 15, will remain with Independiente del Valle for two more years before eventually joining Chelsea’s academy system.
Given the substantial fee that Chelsea has paid for Paez, there will likely be high expectations for his future performances. The club has struggled this season, despite significant investment in the transfer market.
However, players such as Enzo Fernando and Mykhailo Mudryk are expected to use the frustrations of the 2022-23 campaign to fuel their development in the coming years.
If Paez develops as hoped, he will be part of a promising future for Ecuadorian football. Ecuador already boasts a number of talented young players, including Moises Caicedo, Piero Hincapie, and Pervis Estupinan.
With Paez’s addition, the nation could be poised for success in the 2026 and 2030 World Cups.
For Chelsea, the remainder of the season will be focused on player growth, as the club is no longer in contention for any silverware.
Fans can expect to see some of the Blues’ younger players getting more time on the pitch as the campaign winds down.
