Nigerian media personality Oladotun Kayode, popularly known as Do2dtun, recently expressed strong criticism towards a Nigerian designer who publicly stated her practice of charging clients in dollars.
The designer defended her stance, citing the rise in fabric prices and the devaluation of the naira against the US dollar as reasons behind her decision.
Reacting to the viral video, Do2dtun stated that in global business practices, Americans transact in dollars, while the British use pounds rather than Nigerian naira. He emphasized the importance of charging fellow Nigerians in their local currency and clients from other countries in their respective currencies.
The OAP further raised a pertinent question, asking whether the designer would be comfortable if the government levied taxes in dollars. He pointed out the adverse effects of normalizing such practices, stating that it contributes to the devaluation of the naira and negatively impacts the economy.
In his words, Do2dtun stated, “An absolute wrong take. Americans charge you in dollars. British charge you in pounds, not naira. Even you have to convert your own Naira to pay them in their own currency.”
He continued, “No one said you should not charge. In Nigeria, charge in Naira. Others, charge them in their own currency. You are charging in dollars in Nigeria but you are paying your taxes in Naira… Dey play.”
“If the government charged you taxes in dollars, would you pay? Your sta. You charge in dollars. Do you pay your staff in dollars? ”
“We need to stop normalizing these things. It cripples the economy and devalues the Naira. If your client is outside Nigeria then that’s understandable. It’s why it’s called foreign exchange.”
