Chelsea FC has been hit with a significant setback as it’s been revealed that their star defender, Ben Chilwell, will remain sidelined until at least December due to a hamstring injury.
Chilwell, who recently took on the role of vice-captain, has had a mixed start to the season, with his performances garnering attention.
Chilwell’s injury occurred during an EFL Cup match against Brighton & Hove Albion, just as he was nearing completion of the game. Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea’s manager, later confirmed that the injury was “bad” and would keep the English international out of action for the foreseeable future. Initial reports suggested a one-month absence, but according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Chilwell’s return might be postponed until December or beyond.
This injury comes at a crucial time for Chelsea, as Chilwell’s versatility and contributions to defense and attack have been significant. He has often been used in an advanced role down the flank, offering an additional attacking dimension.
Potential Replacements
In Chilwell’s absence, Pochettino has several options to consider. Levi Colwill has been deployed as a left-back, allowing Chilwell to take on a more attacking position. Meanwhile, Marc Cucurella has filled in at right-back during Reece James’s absence and has become an important part of the squad. Cucurella’s performances in recent matches, including the EFL Cup and Premier League wins, have been commendable.
Ian Maatsen, typically used as a number 10 or in advanced roles, can also be considered for defensive duties if needed.
As Chelsea navigates this injury setback, fans anxiously await updates on Chilwell’s recovery timeline and the team’s ability to adapt to his absence on the pitch.
