Luis Suárez has officially joined Inter Miami CF for the 2024 MLS season.
The high-profile addition marks a reunion between Suárez, Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba, elevating the FC Barcelona reunion in South Florida.
Previously with Grêmio, Suárez, at 36, emerged as Brazil’s Serie A second-leading scorer, notching an impressive 26 goals and 17 assists across 53 games in the past season. Jorge Mas, managing owner, expressed the club’s enthusiasm for Suárez’s winning drive, highlighting the pursuit of world-class talent to compete at the highest levels.
Suárez’s extensive career spans notable stints at Ajax, Liverpool, Atlético Madrid, and FC Barcelona, where he gathered nearly 475 goals and over 20 trophies. Miami co-owner David Beckham lauded Suárez’s quality and anticipation to blend with former teammates and budding talents from the Academy.
As Uruguay’s all-time leading scorer with 68 goals in 138 appearances, Suárez’s international success, including partnering with Edinson Cavani for La Celeste, adds further depth to Inter Miami’s attacking prowess.
Suárez expressed his excitement for the challenge ahead, aiming to contribute to the club’s pursuit of more titles and delight the passionate fanbase.
His arrival at Inter Miami solidifies the striking options alongside Ecuador’s Leonardo Campana under head coach Tata Martino. With a star-studded lineup featuring Messi, Robert Taylor, and Facundo Farías, the team’s attacking force gains significant firepower.
The club’s chief business officer, Xavier Asensi, emphasized Suárez’s value as a significant asset, aligning with the club’s ambitions to leave a lasting mark on US soccer. With Inter Miami defending their Leagues Cup champions title in 2024 and eyeing multiple trophies, the anticipation for Suárez’s impact is palpable.
The team’s chief soccer officer, Chris Henderson, anticipates Suárez’s contribution to elevating the club’s performance in various top competitions, building on the successes of the previous season. Inter Miami kicks off the MLS regular season on Feb. 21 against Real Salt Lake, following a preseason tour and entry into the Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16 in early March.
