Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea’s manager, is keen on signing a new goalkeeper to assume the number one position.
The likelihood of selling either Kepa Arrizabalaga or Edouard Mendy increases due to this development. According to reports, the club prefers Onana and AC Milan’s Mike Maignan as their choices between the sticks, suggesting that they may have already agreed upon personal terms with Onana.
Onana’s Role in Inter Milan’s Champions League Run
Although ultimately defeated, Onana played a crucial role in helping Inter Milan reach the Champions League final against Manchester City. Despite recent assumptions that Onana would remain at San Siro, the need to address other squad issues for the upcoming 2023-24 season leaves room for a potential transfer, which Chelsea aims to exploit.
Chelsea’s Proposal
According to The Sun, Chelsea has expressed to Inter Milan their willingness to include Lukaku and Koulibaly in any offer for Onana. Lukaku, who recently completed a loan spell with his former club, made a significant impact by contributing 14 goals and seven assists during the second half of the season. Meanwhile, Koulibaly struggled to find consistency in his first season at Chelsea. He is expected to play a lesser role under Pochettino, as the club primarily focuses on domestic fixtures.
The Potential Challenges
Inter Milan’s President, Steven Zhang, has acknowledged that further discussions will occur with Chelsea. However, reaching a resolution that satisfies all parties involved may prove challenging. Additionally, Milan Skriniar’s departure and Stefan de Vrij’s likely exit may necessitate the acquisition of another experienced defender for Inter Milan.
Chelsea’s Valuation
Although the exact valuation of Koulibaly is unclear, Chelsea previously paid a reported fee of £33 million for his signature less than a year ago. Considering the club’s firm stance in negotiations with other players, it is unlikely that Chelsea will significantly reduce their asking price for Koulibaly.
