A bill proposing the creation of Adada State, sponsored by Distinguished Senator Okey Ezea (LP, Enugu North), successfully passed its first reading on the floor of the Nigerian Senate yesterday.
The bill, officially titled the “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Alteration) Bill, 2024 (SB. 482),” aims to amend Section 3(1) and the First Schedule, Part 1 of the Constitution. This amendment seeks to establish Adada State, increasing the number of states in the South-East to six. Consequently, this would bring the South-East in line with other geopolitical zones in Nigeria.
Transitioning to the background, a statement from Aniebo Nwamu, the senior special adviser on media to the senator, highlighted that the push for Adada State dates back to 1983. At that time, Senator Isaiah Ani, representing the Nsukka senatorial zone in the Second Republic, presented a similar bill.
Furthermore, expectations soared after the 2014 Constitutional Conference recommended creating an additional state in the South-East.
Despite various proposals for new states in the region over the years, none have gained as much acceptance and qualification as Adada.
