Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun state has unveiled an N273.9 billion budget for 2024, titled ‘Budget of Reconstruction and Recovery’.
This budget, which marks the governor’s first since assuming office, aims to rejuvenate the state’s economy, which he described as “battered,” and to pave the way for recovery and growth.
Of the total budget, N165.65 billion is allocated for recurrent expenditure, while N108.25 billion is allocated for capital expenditure. Adeleke emphasized the urgency of rebuilding the state’s economy, which requires swift action and comprehensive planning.
In adherence to the state’s laws, which mandate the presentation of a draft budget to the House of Assembly for approval before the year’s end, Adeleke submitted the budget proposal on Thursday. He urged the lawmakers to expedite the passage of the appropriation bill, highlighting the importance of timely implementation for the state’s progress.
Speaker Adewale Egbedun expressed the historical significance of this budget presentation, being the first delivered by the governor and the initial budget deliberated upon by the 8th assembly. He assured that the assembly would work diligently to pass the budget on schedule. Furthermore, Egbedun instructed various state ministries, agencies, and departments (MDAs) to provide the assembly with 35 copies of their respective budgets.
Additionally, the speaker disclosed the governor’s nominees for several state statutory commissions, such as the Osun Independent Electoral Commission and the Osun Assembly Service Commission.
Nominees for the State Judicial Service Commission and the Civil Service Commission were also announced.
Egbedun emphasized that each nominee must submit 35 copies of their curriculum vitae to the house clerk, ensuring a comprehensive review of their qualifications and suitability for the positions.
