The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cleared 177,914 new registrants to vote in the upcoming Edo and Ondo states off-cycle governorship elections. Specifically, 119,206 new voters are set for the September election in Edo State, while 58,708 new voters will participate in the Ondo State poll.
INEC, through a statement by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, noted that these figures exclude the 8,847 applications for transfer into Edo State and the 3,132 into Ondo State from other states. The figures also do not include intra-state transfers, as these are already captured on the register.
The commission explained that the preliminary figures were initially released before the claims and objections period, followed by data cleanup using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS). With these processes now concluded, INEC will soon release the comprehensive and final register of voters, integrating the new registrations and inter-state transfers into the existing register.
