On Thursday, the Delta State Government in Nigeria announced that six people lost their lives as a result of a rainstorm and windstorm in the Oko Community of the Oshimili South Local Government Area of the state.
The State Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, confirmed the unfortunate incident during a news conference held in Asaba.
An additional five people who sustained various injuries are receiving treatment at the hospital.
Aniagwu explained that the collapse of a structure was responsible for the death of the six persons, while one other person is currently receiving critical medical attention at the Asaba Specialist Hospital.
The five other individuals who suffered injuries are in stable condition.
The Commissioner expressed his sadness about the unfortunate event, describing it as disturbing and unfortunate.
“It is something that is quite disturbing and unfortunate. It is our prayer that God will grant the deceased eternal rest even as we pray to God to comfort the bereaved families and grant them the fortitude to bear their loss,” he said.
In another development, Aniagwu announced that a 10-year-old boy was swept away at the Okotomi area of the Okpanam Community in the Oshimili North Local Government Area.
He assured the public that the State Government is coordinating efforts to rescue the boy.
Additionally, the Commissioner disclosed that Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has authorized the establishment of an Inauguration Committee to oversee a smooth transition to the next administration in the state.
On the falling of a petrol tanker on Udu Bridge, Aniagwu appealed to residents to be patient, saying that efforts were on to evacuate the tanker for free flow of traffic.
