OceanGate, a tour firm specializing in expeditions to the Titanic wreck, has reported the disappearance of one of its submersible crafts in the Atlantic Ocean.
The vessel, named Titan, typically accommodates five people and embarks on dives with a four-day supply of oxygen. As a major search and rescue operation is underway, OceanGate expressed its dedication to ensuring the crew’s safety and coordinating with government agencies and deep-sea companies for support.
The Titanic, which sank in 1912 and rests approximately 3,800m (12,500ft) below the ocean’s surface, remains a site of great interest and exploration.
OceanGate’s eight-day carbon-fibre submersible expedition is designed to provide individuals with an extraordinary opportunity to witness the wreckage. The company has an ongoing expedition, with two more planned for June 2024.
The missing submersible, Titan, serves as OceanGate’s primary vessel capable of reaching the depths required to access the Titanic wreckage.
Weighing 10,432 kg (23,000 lbs), it can dive to depths of up to 4,000m and provides 96 hours of life support for its five crew. The dive to the Titanic and back, including descent and ascent, typically spans around eight hours.
OceanGate emphasizes its concern for the well-being of the crew and their families. The company expresses gratitude for the extensive assistance from government agencies and deep-sea companies in the joint effort to re-establish contact with the submersible.
Since its discovery in 1985, the Titanic wreckage, located approximately 600km (370 miles) off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, has been subject to extensive exploration.
Divided into two parts, the bow and the stern, separated by 800m (2,600ft), the wreck is surrounded by a significant debris field. Last month, a comprehensive digital scan of the wreck, capturing intricate details such as the propellers’ serial number, was created using advanced deep-sea mapping techniques.
As the search and rescue operation continues, updates regarding the missing submersible and crew are eagerly anticipated. OceanGate and the involved authorities remain dedicated to resolving the situation and ensuring the crew’s safe return.
