President Bola Tinubu is currently meeting with labor union leaders at the State House in Abuja amidst nationwide protests against the removal of petrol subsidy without sufficient palliative measures.
The protests, spearheaded by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), express concerns about the potential impact on citizens’ cost of living, especially for the vulnerable population.
This meeting aims to address the workers’ grievances, negotiate potential solutions, and present demands for appropriate palliative measures to ease the economic burdens caused by subsidy removal.

The labor union leaders aim to seek assurances from the government that their concerns will be promptly and effectively addressed. They want to ensure that the removal of the petrol subsidy does not overly burden Nigerians, particularly those already facing economic challenges.
In his inaugural address on May 29, President Bola Tinubu declared an end to the petrol subsidy regime. However, this announcement resulted in an immediate hike in the pump price of petrol, a quadrupling of transportation costs in certain regions, and a surge in inflation across various market segments.
