President Bola Tinubu has recently announced the renaming of several federal airports in Nigeria, paying tribute to prominent figures in the country.
The Federal Ministry of Aviation shared a memorandum on June 1, 2023, signed by Mrs. Joke Olatunji on behalf of the Director of Airport Operations, confirming the name changes.
A statement revealed that the President’s decision to rename the airports was part of his comprehensive aviation sector reforms. This move aims to recognize the significant contributions made by these individuals to the nation’s progress.

The airports that have undergone name changes include the Maiduguri Airport, now renamed after the immediate past President, Muhammadu Buhari. Furthermore, the Port Harcourt Airport has been renamed after the late nationalist Obafemi Awolowo. The Nasarawa Airport pays tribute to the late founder of the Sokoto Caliphate, Usman Dan Fodio.
In addition, the late Oba of Benin, Oba Akenzua II, has been honored by renaming the Benin Airport. The Ebonyi Airport now bears the name of the late Senate President, Chuba Okadigbo. The Ibadan Airport is now named after the late Premier of the old Western Region, Ladoke Akintola.

- Dutse Airport – Muhammad Nuhu Sanusi
- Ebonyi Airport – Chuba Wilberforce Okadigbo
- Gombe Airport – Brigadier Zakari Maimalari
- Ibadan Airport – Samuel Ladoke Akintola
- Ilorin Airport – Gen. Tunde Idiagbon
- Kaduna Airport – Hassan Usman Katsina
- Maiduguri Airport – Gen. Mumammadu Buhari
- Makurdi Airport – Joseph Sarwuan Tarka
- Minna Airport – Mallam Abubakar Imam
- Nassarawa Airport – Sheikh Usman Dan Fodio
- Osubi Airport – Alfred Diete Spiff
- Port Harcourt Airport – Obafemi Jeremiah Awolowo
- Yola Airport – Lamido Aliyu Mustapha
