The United States District Court in the Northern District of Illinois has granted the request of Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for the release of President Bola Tinubu’s academic records from Chicago State University.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeffrey Gilbert delivered the ruling on Tuesday, ordering Chicago State University to provide “all relevant and non-privileged documents” to Atiku Abubakar within two days.
It’s worth noting that Tinubu’s legal team had argued against lifting their client’s privacy privilege, and the court clarified that only “non-privileged documents” should be produced.
Judge Gilbert explained, “This matter is before the Court on Atiku Abubakar’s Application Pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 1782 for an Order Directing Discovery from Chicago State University for Use in a Foreign Proceeding (“Application”) [E.C.F. No. 1]. For the reasons discussed below, the Application is granted.”

Atiku had initiated legal action to compel the university to release Tinubu’s academic records.
In related news, shortly after the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal confirmed Tinubu’s victory, Atiku Abubakar and his counterpart from the Labour Party, Peter Obi, have taken action by filing 86 grounds of appeal at the Supreme Court in an attempt to nullify the judgment.
In separate appeals submitted on Tuesday, both candidates have asked the apex court to set aside the PEPT ruling and invalidate Tinubu’s election, citing the verdict as erroneous.
Atiku’s appeal was based on 35 grounds where he challenged the tribunal’s decision regarding electronic transmission of results, Federal Capital Territory votes, and other significant aspects.
On the other hand, Peter Obi objected to the September 6 judgment on 51 grounds.
