As an ominous orange haze of wildfire smoke originating from Canada engulfs various regions in the eastern United States, authorities are sounding the alarm about unhealthy and hazardous air conditions.
Over 55 million people in the eastern US are under air quality alerts due to the pervasive smoke. The most severe impacts are anticipated in the Northeast, extending through the Mid-Atlantic down to the Carolinas. Experts caution that these adverse smoke conditions may persist until Thursday, warranting vigilance and preventive measures.
Unhealthy Air Quality in Major Metropolitan Areas
Several major metropolitan areas in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut are grappling with deteriorating air quality, as reflected in their Air Quality Index (AQI) readings. According to AirNow.gov, an official government website, an AQI above 150 is considered “unhealthy.” Philadelphia, for instance, registered an AQI of 205 on Wednesday morning, classifying the air quality as “very unhealthy.” Similarly, New York City, Jersey City in New Jersey, and New Haven in Connecticut reported “unhealthy” AQI ranging from 155 to 171 during the same period.

Concerns Extend to Canada
The situation is equally alarming in Ottawa, the Canadian capital, experiencing some of the most severe air quality deterioration. AirNow.gov, a collaboration between the US Environmental Protection Agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other agencies, highlights the extent of the air quality crisis in Ottawa.
Air Quality Outlook
While New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC, are expected to witness an improvement in air quality throughout the day, the outlook for Boston, Pittsburgh, and Raleigh, North Carolina, is bleak, with conditions anticipated to worsen on Wednesday.

Philadelphia Issues “Code Red” Alert
In response to the deteriorating air quality, Philadelphia has issued a “code red” alert, urging specific residents to remain indoors. James Garrow, the spokesperson for the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, warns that the elderly, young children, pregnant individuals, and those with heart or lung conditions are particularly vulnerable to serious health effects resulting from the smoke.
He advises individuals not falling under sensitive groups to abstain from strenuous outdoor activities such as jogging or exercising. Instead, he encourages them to limit unnecessary outside time and wear masks when venturing outdoors.
Garrow acknowledges that the duration of the “code red” alert remains uncertain, leaving open the possibility of it being upgraded to a higher level of warning.
