Arsenal have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper David Raya on a season-long loan from Brentford, with an option to buy for £27m (m).
The 27-year-old Spaniard will compete with Aaron Ramsdale for the number one goalkeeping spot at Arsenal following the departure of backup choice Matt Turner to Nottingham Forest.
Arsenal’s sporting director Edu said in an official statement:
“We welcome David to us on a season-long loan from Brentford. David is a top-quality goalkeeper, who has consistently performed to a high level with Brentford in the Premier League. With David joining us we are adding quality and depth to our squad so we can perform at the highest possible level in all competitions.”
The initial loan deal for Raya will cost Arsenal £3 million ($3.8m), with Brentford extending his contract until 2025 to protect his value if the option is not taken up.
Raya had previously entered the last year of his deal. The Gunners have confirmed that Raya will wear the number 22 shirt.
Raya has played 161 times for Brentford since signing from Blackburn Rovers in 2019. He has been a key player for the Bees, helping them to reach the Premier League for the first time in their history. Raya is known for his excellent shot-stopping ability and distribution skills, making him a perfect fit for Arsenal’s style of play.
Arsenal will take on Crystal Palace on Monday in their second Premier League fixture of the new season. It remains to be seen who will start in goal for that clash, but with the addition of Raya, Arsenal now have two quality goalkeepers to choose from.
