Luis Campos, the football advisor for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), has reportedly held talks with Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta regarding the vacant managerial position at the Parc des Princes.
Despite achieving success by winning the Ligue 1 and Trophee des Champions titles for PSG in the 2022-23 season, Christophe Galtier is expected to be sacked before the 2023-24 campaign starts.
Galtier, who left Nice last year to replace Mauricio Pochettino at PSG, oversaw the team’s exit from the UEFA Champions League in the round of 16 against Bayern Munich. Furthermore, PSG narrowly finished one point ahead of Lens at the top of the Ligue 1 table.
Initially, Julian Nagelsmann was considered the top candidate for the PSG managerial role. However, recent reports suggest that negotiations between the two parties have broken down.
Luis Enrique and Bologna head coach Thiago Motta have been mentioned as alternatives. However, RMC Sport has revealed that Campos reached out to Arteta to assess his interest in the position.
Arteta, who had a loan spell at PSG as a player from Barcelona between 2001 and 2002, is valued by Campos for his previous experience in Paris. Nevertheless, Arteta is under contract with Arsenal until the summer of 2025, and the chances of PSG successfully luring him away from the Emirates Stadium are believed to be slim to none.
Arteta, who retired as a player in 2016, worked under the guidance of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City for three years before taking charge of Arsenal in 2019 following Unai Emery’s departure.
Since then, Arteta has managed the Gunners in 179 matches, achieving 105 victories, 27 draws, and 47 defeats. He won the FA Cup and the Community Shield in his debut season.
Despite facing uncertainty about his future at Arsenal after consecutive eighth-placed finishes in the Premier League, Arteta received the backing of the club’s hierarchy.
His faith in Arsenal’s project has been rewarded, as he guided the team to a fifth-place finish in the 2021-22 season, securing a return to the Europa League.
The following season, Arteta orchestrated an unexpected title charge against his former club, Manchester City. Arsenal spent 248 days at the top of the league table but ultimately settled for second place, finishing five points behind Guardiola’s side.
As a result, Arsenal will participate in the UEFA Champions League for the first time since the 2016-17 season. They will also face Manchester City in the Community Shield on August 6, aiming to clinch another trophy under Arteta’s guidance.
