As the transfer window swings open, football clubs vigorously pursue their desired targets to strengthen their squads for the upcoming season.
Among the Premier League’s top contenders, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United are all eager to bolster their teams to challenge reigning champions Manchester City in the 2023/24 campaign.
While initial reports suggested that Manchester United was keen on signing Mason Mount from Chelsea, recent developments indicate a shift in focus towards hijacking Moises Caicedo’s move to Stamford Bridge.
The Bid for Mason Mount

Manchester United’s opening bid for Mason Mount, valued at approximately £40M, was swiftly rejected by Chelsea. The Blues are holding out for £70M to part ways with their talented academy graduate. However, there are indications that Chelsea might consider a lower offer if United were to return with an improved bid.

Chelsea’s Pursuit of Moises Caicedo

Meanwhile, Chelsea is making significant progress in securing the services of Moises Caicedo from Brighton and Hove Albion. Caicedo, viewed as a younger incarnation of N’golo Kante, has caught Chelsea’s attention as they seek to fill the void left by Kante’s departure to the Saudi Arabia Pro League a few weeks ago. Brighton appears willing to let the Ecuadorian midfielder depart for the right price.
Manchester United’s Rationale for the Switch
While both Mason Mount and Moises Caicedo are exceptional players in their respective positions, there are compelling reasons why Manchester United should redirect their attention from Mount and prioritize hijacking Caicedo’s potential move to Chelsea.
1. Need for a Central Defensive Midfielder
Manchester United’s primary requirement lies in strengthening their central defensive midfield position. With Bruno Fernandes effectively performing as a number 10 for over four years, the Portuguese international has become a pivotal figure in the team’s attack.
Furthermore, United has additional options in the form of Eriksen, who can adequately fill the attacking midfielder role. Therefore, prioritizing the acquisition of another attacking-minded midfielder like Mount seems unnecessary when the focus should be on reinforcing the defensive side.

2. Alleviating the Workload on Casemiro
The signing of Moises Caicedo would address Manchester United’s need for a central defensive midfielder and provide a player who can effectively support Casemiro in the midfield. Caicedo’s abilities as a destroyer, coupled with his resemblance to N’golo Kante, make him an ideal candidate to form a formidable partnership with Casemiro.
This partnership would grant Bruno Fernandes the freedom and space to contribute even more significantly in the attacking third.
