Alvaro Fernandez is all set to make a significant impact on the left-back position at Manchester United in the upcoming season.
The Athletic recently reported that the Spanish talent has a strong chance of earning a spot in the first team for the 2023/24 season.
Fernandez gained valuable experience during his loan spell at Preston North End in the Championship last season. Despite being included on the Manchester United bench under Ralf Rangnick’s management, he has not yet made his official debut.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has expressed interest in integrating Fernandez into the first team as an additional left-back option, enhancing the squad’s depth. While Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia currently occupy the left-back position, Shaw occasionally played as a center-back last season, leading to the deployment of Diogo Dalot on the right flank.
Fernandez’s loan spell began in July of the previous year, preventing him from working with Erik Ten Hag since the manager arrived at Manchester United. Consequently, he couldn’t participate in the team’s pre-season activities. Nonetheless, Fernandez showcased his abilities at Preston, earning the title Young Player of the Year.

As the new season approaches, Fernandez is expected to take a significant step forward in his career. The Athletic report also suggests the possibility of a loan move to a Premier League club. Fernandez was acquired by Manchester United from Real Madrid in 2020, alongside the signing of Alejandro Garnacho from Atletico Madrid in the same transfer window.
With his potential, Fernandez is undoubtedly a player to watch during the upcoming pre-season. He will be highly motivated to seize any opportunities that come his way, as they could shape his trajectory for the next twelve months.
