Manchester United’s pursuit of Napoli center-back Kim Min-Jae this summer has hit a potential roadblock as Bayern Munich enters the race.
Reports suggest that Bayern has made significant progress in negotiations, jeopardizing United’s hopes. The South Korean defender’s outstanding performances for Napoli during the 2022-23 season have attracted interest from top European clubs.
Initially, German journalist Florian Plettenberg revealed that Bayern Munich, led by manager Thomas Tuchel, is strongly interested in acquiring Kim Min-Jae. Plettenberg suggested that talks between the player and the German club are progressing well, indicating a serious contender for his signature.

According to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano, Bayern Munich has now presented a compelling project to Kim Min-jae, and negotiations regarding personal terms are close to completion. Although Manchester United remains interested, Romano highlights that no deal has been finalized yet, with a release clause set to become active in July.
During the previous season, Kim Min-jae showcased his skills in 45 appearances for Napoli across all competitions. The 26-year-old contributed two goals and two assists, playing a vital role in Napoli’s Serie A title victory and their journey to the Champions League quarter-finals. His performances have generated widespread speculation among major European clubs vying for his signature.
The existence and amount of a buy-out fee in Kim’s contract have caused confusion. Despite having a contract with Napoli until June 2025, with an option for an additional two years, reports indicate that the defender could be available for a fee ranging from €50m (£43m) to €70m (£60m) starting next month.

Manchester United currently boasts several options in central defense, including Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, and Luke Shaw, who impressed when utilized in that position last season. Additionally, Eric Bailly is set to return to Old Trafford after a loan spell at Marseille. However, Maguire’s anticipated departure due to limited playing time and Bailly’s likely exit, as he doesn’t feature in the plans of coach Erik ten Hag, will create room for a new center-back.
Kim Min-jae appears to be Manchester United’s primary target for bolstering their defense. However, if Bayern Munich secures his services, United may redirect their attention to alternative options. AS Monaco’s Axel Disasi and Leeds United’s Robin Koch are reportedly on their radar as potential replacements.
