In a recent press conference before France’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Gibraltar, Kylian Mbappe, the captain of the French national team, discussed his future amid ongoing speculation.
The news broke earlier this week that Mbappe had no intention of extending his contract with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) beyond 2024.
When asked about possibly leaving PSG, Mbappe responded, “I’ve already responded. I’ve said that my plan is to continue at the club, to stay with PSG. It’s my only option for the moment. I’m ready to come back for the start of the season. I hope that the next questions will be about the match tomorrow against Gibraltar.”
Despite rumors suggesting that French President Emmanuel Macron had pressured Mbappe to remain at PSG, the star player dismissed such claims, stating, “His influence on my career? None at all. He hopes I stay in Paris, but my main goal is also to stay, so we’re on the same wavelength.”
Mbappe, unambiguous in his stance, declared, “I have a responsibility as captain. A few noises won’t make me run away from this responsibility. It’s not my temperament to run away.”
As the press conference drew close, Mbappe refused to elaborate further on his situation at the club, remarking, “There is nothing left to explain.”
He continued, “People can talk, they can criticize… People don’t know all the ins and outs of this case. I know why I do what I do and I say everything I say.”
Following their match against Gibraltar in Faro, France, the runners-up of the World Cup are set to face Greece on Monday in Group B of the Euro 2024 qualifying stage. Mbappe was appointed as France’s new captain at the beginning of Euro qualifying in March, and the team achieved victories over the Netherlands and Ireland.
By demonstrating unwavering commitment to PSG and addressing the speculations head-on, Mbappe aims to shift the focus back to the upcoming match and his role as captain of the French national team.
