Equatorial Guinea’s vice president has warned that civil servants caught engaging in sexual acts at work will face “severe measures” after the leak of hundreds of allegedly pornographic videos involving Baltasar Engonga.
The videos reportedly feature Baltasar Ebang Engonga, a high-ranking civil servant and head of the National Financial Investigation Agency, engaging in sexual acts with various women, including wives of prominent officials, in his office. Engonga is also related to the president of Equatorial Guinea.
Vice President Teodoro Obiang Mangue stated that officials engaging in such acts would be suspended, calling it a “flagrant violation of the code of conduct.” To address this, he has ordered surveillance cameras to be installed in courts and ministries to deter “indecent and illicit acts.”
The vice president’s office issued a statement saying the decision followed the wide circulation of videos that “denigrated the image of the country” and recommended opening an investigation.
The videos were leaked after Engonga’s arrest on separate corruption charges, according to state TV, TVGE. Last week, Vice President Obiang expressed concern over the spread of “pornographic videos” on social media and ordered telecom companies to limit their circulation. Since then, internet access in Equatorial Guinea, especially for image downloads, has reportedly been heavily restricted.
Engonga, who is responsible for combating financial crimes, has also attracted scrutiny from Equatorial Guinea’s chief prosecutor, Anatolio Nzang Nguema, who stated that Engonga could be prosecuted for “public health” violations if he is found to have a sexually transmitted disease.
Engonga is reportedly nicknamed “Bello” (Spanish for “beautiful”) due to his reputed good looks.
