The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured the public that there will be no glitches in uploading results for the Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi elections on the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV).
INEC’s Chief Press Secretary, Rotimi Oyekanmi, confirmed this in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today. He acknowledged that technical issues arose during the 2023 general elections but emphasized that these challenges have been resolved.
“We have been using the IReV for all governorship elections, but [in 2023] it was the first time we deployed it for the general election setting. Well, we had a glitch for some hours, and we fixed it. But I can assure you that this time around we are not going to have glitches,” said Oyekanmi.
He further explained that INEC conducted a mock accreditation last week to test the technology gadgets, ensuring their functionality. Oyekanmi acknowledged the possibility of technology downtime but assured that lessons had been learned from the 2023 general elections.
“Technology can throw up challenges, but by and large, we have learned our lessons from the 2023 general elections,” he stated.
Oyekanmi clarified that INEC’s use of the IReV portal involves uploading, not transmitting results. “We are not transmitting; we are uploading,” he said, highlighting the distinction between the two processes. “All we are doing is that we are taking a picture of the polling unit results and uploading same to the portal.”
