Chelsea’s pursuit of Moises Caicedo from Brighton has encountered obstacles due to disagreements over the transfer fee.
As the frustration grows, the Blues explore other options to bolster their midfield. Here are five talented defensive midfielders from the EPL and Europe that Chelsea could consider as alternatives:
1. Romeo Lavia (Southampton)
Belgian midfielder Romeo Lavia has been linked with Chelsea alongside Caicedo. Currently playing for Southampton, Lavia’s defensive prowess and passing ability make him an attractive option in the midfield. Although Liverpool is close to agreeing on a deal, Chelsea could still swoop in and secure his services if they miss out on Caicedo.
2. Amadou Onana (Everton)
Another Belgian midfielder, Amadou Onana, is on Everton’s books and has been linked with a move to Chelsea. Having already proven himself in the EPL, Onana could be an excellent addition to Chelsea’s midfield. He rejected the chance to join the Blues earlier to help Everton, but if Caicedo remains out of reach, he could be a more affordable alternative.

3. Manu Kone (Borussia Monchengladbach)
Manu Kone, a promising young French midfielder, is considered one of Europe’s top defensive midfield talents. Playing for Borussia Monchengladbach in Germany, Kone’s market value is €40.00m ($47.2 million), which should not be a concern for Chelsea if they decide to pursue him as an alternative.
4. Sofyan Amrabat (Fiorentina)
Sofyan Amrabat, a Moroccan midfielder, has drawn interest from Barcelona and Manchester United. Known for his versatility and strong defensive attributes, Amrabat could be an appealing choice for Chelsea, especially with a potentially more reasonable price tag than Caicedo’s valuation.
5. Edson Alvarez (PSV)
A versatile Mexican midfielder, Edson Alvarez currently plays for PSV. Chelsea has shown interest in Alvarez in the past, and his potential availability at a lower price than Caicedo’s valuation makes him an intriguing prospect for the Blues to consider. Alvarez can play as a central midfielder, center-back, or right-back, offering additional versatility to Chelsea’s squad.
