In music, artists are lucky to have devoted fan bases that wholeheartedly support and appreciate their work.
These fans, affectionately known as stans, can truly be a wellspring of inspiration for their beloved artists. Nevertheless, there are times when fandom takes a wrong turn and veers into the realm of toxic behaviour.
This very issue has been thrust into the spotlight with the Davido and Burna Boy saga that is currently trending.
It all started when Davido commented on Burna Boy being a “new cat” in the music industry. Burna Boy’s fans responded with banter, defending their favourite artist. However, things turned dark when a troll wished death upon Davido, comparing his concert to a burial.
“Even Davido’s burial that would be free can’t pack this crowd. Know ur mate.”
This tweet immediately went viral, with many condemning it. Talent manager Pauloo Okoye then offered a reward of N5 million to identify the troll, but Burna Boy responded with amusement, unintentionally perpetuating the negativity.
The troll, feeling emboldened, attacked Okoye personally, resorting to body-shaming and derogatory remarks.
“Paulo is funny. U dey put 5m for my head lmao. Bald-headed toothless man. Using Igbo sense to deceive people for public validation.”
“If you really want to find one you can easily do that without making noise on social media and when you do that I promise you nothing will happen”.
The troll’s actions show a lack of decency and remind us of the dangers that can arise in online fandom when behaviour goes unchecked. Seeing discrimination based on ethnicity in this situation is disheartening, which underscores the importance of promoting civil discourse and working towards eliminating division and hate.
The Davido and Burna Boy saga reminds us of setting healthy boundaries within fandoms. As fans, expressing our admiration and support for our favourite artists is wonderful, but let’s do so without resorting to hate or harassment. It’s all about spreading positivity and love!
Similarly, artists significantly influence their fans, and they can make a real difference by promoting positivity and discouraging toxic behaviour. They can shape their fan bases into supportive and respectful communities. Let’s encourage our favourite artists to use their platforms for good!
Let this incident serve as a wake-up call for both fans and artists. It’s time for some self-reflection and to come together to create a community where we can appreciate art without causing harm to others. Remember, crossing the line into toxicity only leads to division and negativity. So, let’s choose kindness and understanding instead.
