Ghanaian actress Yvonne Nelson recently made a shocking revelation about her past relationship with rapper Sarkodie in her newly released memoir titled ‘I Am Not Yvonne Nelson.’
The actress shared intimate details about her decision to terminate a pregnancy she had with Sarkodie.
In a chapter titled ‘A Difficult Decision,’ Nelson candidly recounted her experience dealing with an unexpected pregnancy and the difficult choice she had to make during that time.
Nelson found herself in a complicated situation involving the rapper, reflecting on the emotional turmoil she experienced when Sarkodie refused to take responsibility for the pregnancy. The reason he gave for his refusal was his involvement with another girlfriend. This ultimately led Yvonne to decide to terminate the pregnancy, a decision she later admitted regretting.
The actress shed light on the profound impact this experience had on her and the strength she found in making a decision she believed was best for herself and her circumstances. She expressed her emotional state at the time: “On an ordinary day, I would have laughed out loud,, and that would trigger a string of jolly conversations and jokes. But this was no laughing matter. It was a grim piece of information that was capable of turning my world upside down.”
Yvonne Nelson revealed that she reached out to Sarkodie, whose real name is Michael Owusu Addo, to discuss the situation. At the time, Sarkodie was a budding musician with uncertain prospects for the future, still living with his mother and not ready to take on the responsibility of fatherhood.

Nelson described their relationship: “I wouldn’t call what had developed between us a serious relationship. I gravitated toward people in the music industry. For the longest time in my life, music was my getaway from all the unpleasant things life threw at me. So, I liked his talent. We started talking and got close. Closer.”
The actress also revealed her attempts to abort the baby by taking concoctions recommended by a colleague. However, these attempts proved unsuccessful, as a test revealed she was still pregnant.
“The first thing that hit me when he said no to keeping the pregnancy was my own life. I had grown up without a father in my life. I had often been reminded of how I had been borne by mistake,” Nelson shared in her book.
“I was still wondering if the man whose name I bore was my father. How was I going to bring another human being into this world to live like me, someone whose father would reject him or her as Mr. Nelson had rejected me? If there was a way to spare someone else the trauma I was contending with, why would I reject that option, especially when I was not.”
Nelson eventually succeeded in terminating the pregnancy but expressed deep regret over her decision. She stated, “It is one of the most regrettable mistakes in my life. If the clock of life could be rewound to my younger self, I would keep it.”
