In a significant development, Femi Gbajabiamila has tendered his resignation from the 10th House of Representatives.
The announcement came during Wednesday’s plenary, where Tajudeen Abbas, the House Speaker, read Gbajabiamila’s resignation letter.
Gbajabiamila stated that he had decided to step down to assume the crucial position of Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu. This appointment by the President was officially made on June 2, underscoring the importance of the role entrusted to Gbajabiamila.
Having served as the Speaker of the House of Representatives between 2019 and 2023, Gbajabiamila has been an influential figure in Nigerian politics. He has dedicated 20 years to the lower chamber, representing Surulere 1 federal constituency. Even in the recently concluded 2023 general election, he was re-elected to continue representing his constituency.

Gbajabiamila’s political journey began in 2003 when he was first elected to the House of Representatives. Over the years, he has consistently won five consecutive elections, establishing a strong presence and garnering considerable support. Before assuming the Speaker role he had held notable positions such as Minority Whip, Minority Leader, and Majority Leader.
After reading Gbajabiamila’s resignation letter, Speaker Abbas officially declared the Surulere 1 federal constituency seat vacant. This paves the way for a new representative to be elected and continue the important work of serving the constituency in the House of Representatives.
