In a historic event at the Red Chamber in Abuja, Nigeria, Senate Godswill Akpabio has officially been sworn in as the President of the Senate for the 10th National Assembly.
This significant development comes after a rigorous voting process on Tuesday morning.
The voting procedure began promptly at 8:45 am and followed an alphabetical order based on each state. It concluded precisely at 9:15 am, marking the end of the voting phase. The contest for the Senate presidency primarily revolved around two prominent candidates, Senator Abdul’aziz Yari and Senator Godswill Akpabio.

After tallying the votes, Senator Akpabio emerged victorious, garnering a total of 63 votes, while his opponent, Senator Abdul’aziz Yari, received 46 votes. This substantial margin of victory solidified Akpabio’s position as the President of the 10th Senate.
The swearing-in ceremony took place promptly at 9:44 am, signifying the official commencement of Senator Akpabio’s tenure as Senate President. The Clerk of the Senate declared nominations closed after considering the nominations for Senator Abdul’aziz Yari and Senator Godswill Akpabio.
Akpabio’s election marks a significant transition in leadership as he succeeds Ahmad Lawan as the Senate President.
