Prominent Ilorin Isese devotee and activist Adegbola Abdulazeez, known as Talọlọrun, has been apprehended and incarcerated for defamation in Kwara State.
Talolorun was apprehended for allegedly insulting the Emir of Ilorin and engaging in other offenses.
As outlined in a recent Facebook post on Thursday, this well-known Isese advocate was apprehended on August 16 in Ibadan and later taken to a police facility in Ilorin.
The post briefly stated, “Taniolorun was arrested in Ibadan this evening (August 16) and taken to a police station in Ilorin.”
A subsequent post on August 17 revealed that the activist had been arraigned in court, and an urgent call for support was extended to other Isese practitioners.
The post conveyed, “All Isese practitioners, meet Taniolohun in court in Ilorin. Very urgent.”
Furthermore, a YouTube video released on Thursday depicted Taniolorun discussing the outcome of a prior meeting involving Isese practitioners, their legal representative, and the police, focusing on the prohibition of Isese festivals in Ilorin.
In the video, Taniolorun stated, “To those who said we would not celebrate the Isese festival in Ilorin…have you all been served breakfast now? We (Isese devotees) went with our lawyer to the police station in Ilorin and everyone involved in this case was served, including the Emir of Ilorin. Isese devotees are peace-loving people, we are not troublemakers, we simply wanted to celebrate our festivals but were stopped and asked to seek permission…”
Taniolorun went on to express concern about denying their festival celebration, questioned the necessity of seeking permission for their worship activities, and called for equal rights for all faiths.
An administrator of Taniolorun’s Facebook page also released a video on Friday, reassuring supporters that the Isese advocate would eventually regain freedom despite his arrest.
The administrator stated, “Yoruba people celebrating the arrest of Talolorun, did you believe he would not be eventually arrested? He can not be killed because he did not kill anyone. He will be free…”
A lawyer Abdulkadir Ademola Ajasa, speaking after Thursday’s court session, shed more light on the reason behind Talolorun’s arrest.
Ajasa clarified, “This issue does not have relation to Isese. Before his arrest, the people of Isese visited the commissioner of police on Monday, seeking permission to celebrate the Isese festival in Ilorin…”
Ajasa further explained that the reason for Talolorun’s arrest was his alleged defamation of certain individuals and his alleged incitement of the public against Ilorin, in part due to an incident involving the burning of the Quran.
Another religious figure, speaking in court, supported Ajasa’s explanation, condemning Talolorun’s alleged insults against Muslim leaders and emphasizing the importance of respect for leaders and institutions.
The cleric stated, “Talolorun believes he knows it all. Our Emir and every other leader are not to be disrespected. This needs to be curtailed.”
