On June 7, 2023, George Akume officially assumed office as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) after being sworn in by President Bola Tinubu.
The Live News reports that the momentous event occurred at 11:16 am in the council chambers of the presidential villa, Abuja, and was attended by esteemed guests, including distinguished serving and former governors.
During the ceremony, Akume solemnly took his oath of allegiance and oath of office, signifying his dedication to upholding the duties and responsibilities of his new position. Prominent figures such as Vice-President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Ahmed Lawan, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara state, and Folashade Yemi-Esan, the head of the civil service of the federation, were present to witness this significant occasion. Regina Akume, the wife of the newly appointed SGF, also attended the ceremony, showing support for her husband’s new role.

President Tinubu’s decision to appoint Akume as the SGF was announced on June 2. In addition to Akume, Femi Gbajabiamila, the outgoing speaker of the House of Representatives, was appointed as the Chief of Staff, while Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, a former deputy governor of Jigawa state, assumed the role of Deputy Chief of Staff.
George Akume brings a wealth of experience to his new position, having previously served as the minority leader of the senate from June 2011 to June 2015. Furthermore, he was the governor of Benue state for two terms, from 1999 to 2007, coinciding with President Tinubu’s tenure as the governor of Lagos state.
In an interaction with reporters following his inauguration, Akume expressed his deep sense of honour and responsibility in being chosen for this esteemed position among Nigeria’s population of over 200 million. He acknowledged the challenges ahead and reassured Nigerians of his unwavering commitment to their welfare and the nation’s progress.

“It is an honor to be chosen to serve in this exalted position out of over 200 million Nigerians. It is a challenge to serve in line with the oaths I have taken today,” Akume stated emphatically. “I assure Nigerians I will do my best and not disappoint the president. I will not disappoint this country; I will not disappoint my party.”
Furthermore, Akume conveyed his determination to fulfill his responsibilities diligently, ensuring that Nigerians will find fulfillment in his dedicated service.
With his strong resolve and extensive experience in public service, Akume aims to contribute to the nation’s growth and development as he assumes his new role as SGF.
