Napoli, the Italian football club, has fired coach Rudi Garcia following the team’s third defeat in Serie A this season.
The club has swiftly appointed Walter Mazzarri as their replacement, marking his return to Napoli after a decade.
Mazzarri’s appointment was announced on X, along with a concise statement on the club’s website expressing gratitude to Garcia and his coaching staff for their dedication.
Italian media reports suggest that the 62-year-old Mazzarri has been signed to a six-month contract that extends until the end of the current season.
Garcia, who took over from the previous title-winning manager, Luciano Spalletti, earlier this season, faced mounting pressure after Napoli’s surprising 1-0 loss to Empoli on Sunday. This defeat, occurring only months after Napoli claimed their first Serie A title since the era of Diego Maradona, led club president Aurelio De Laurentiis to make the decisive change.
Despite Garcia’s prior success with Roma from 2013 to 2016, his recent stint at Al Nassr and questionable tactical decisions at Napoli, including benching star player Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, contributed to the dissatisfaction among fans and management.
Walter Mazzarri, who previously guided Napoli to an Italian Cup victory in 2012 during his initial tenure, faces a daunting challenge upon his return. Napoli’s upcoming fixtures against formidable opponents like Atalanta, Real Madrid, Inter, and Juventus present an immediate test for the seasoned coach.
The departure of Garcia and the reappointment of Mazzarri signal a significant shake-up for Napoli as they aim to regain momentum and climb the Serie A standings.
